Melon Canary Tweety Seeds

Melon Canary Tweety Seeds

Cucumis melo var. inodorus (hybrid)

Item #0254

60-70 days. You may have seen canary melons in the grocery store and wondered what they taste like. Popular in Asia and Europe, these bright yellow melons have a smooth rind that protects the sweet, pale green to white flesh. Tweety is an early maturing canary melon that produces 4 to 6 lb. juicy, crisp fruits; the sweet flavor has undertones of cantaloupe and tropical fruit. Stores well after harvest. Disease resistant.

This packet sows 3 mounds.

When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost, and when soil temperature is above 70°F. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 75°-90°F.

When to start inside: Not recommended. 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost. Melon seedlings don't transplant well; if started indoors, use individual pots such as paper or pulp pots that can be planted directly into the ground.

Harvesting: Harvesting at the right time is very important with melons. Fruits should be picked when fully ripe. Commercial growers harvest before melons are ripe, forcing them to ripen off the vine. However, the last few days of ripening on the vine put a lot of sugars into the melon; bottom line is that melons taste significantly better when vine ripened. How do you know when melons are ripe? Canary melons should be firm, smooth to the touch, and have bright yellow color with no hint of green. The stem area should be slightly soft, and fruit will have a delicate scent. Fruits may ripen off the vine a little, but never develop peak flavor if harvested too early.
